Subi reef, located in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, is shown in these handout satellite images provided by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative and released to Reuters October 27, 2015.

The images were taken less than one month apart.

The U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen on Monday sailed within the 12-nautical-mile territorial limits China claims around artificial islands, heightening tensions in the area.

Subi Reef is one of seven artificial islands built up by China in the past year.
