An oil tanker carrying upwards of 60,000 liters of oil sludge sank in the Gulf of Thailand today according to the Thai News Agency.
Surachai Burapanontachai, Director of the 3rd Region Marine Office at the Samut Sakhon Branch commented in the report that five crew members were safely rescued after water filled the vessel’s engine room causing the ship to sink approximately three to four kilometers offshore the Maha Chai coast.
An oil spill has been reported as a result of the incident, however the extent of the environmental impact is not yet known.
