Since passing under bridges is basically a prerequisite when it comes to a life at sea, it is no wonder why most mariners are utterly fascinated by -and possibly a bit fearful of- them. The new $6.8 billion eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, which just opened this week following years of construction, is no different.

A Dutch engineering firm has come up with a unique solution that it believes could be the answer to road and waterway traffic congestion caused by the raising or opening of low movable bridges so that tall vessels can pass below.
A team of NOAA researchers today confirmed the discovery just outside San Francisco’s Golden Gate strait of the 1910 shipwreck SS Selja and an unidentified early steam tugboat wreck tagged the “mystery wreck.” The researchers also located the 1863 wreck of the clipper ship Noonday, currently obscured by mud and silt on the ocean floor.
