Capital Maritime Group is revealing new details about its order for the world’s largest tankers capable of carrying liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2).

As we reported earlier this week, Capital Maritime, through its subsidiary Capital Gas Ship Management Corp., has ordered two 22,000 cbm LCO2 carriers art Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea with deliveries scheduled in 2025 and 2026.

The order comes as the demand for liquified CO2 transportation is expected to grow alongside the global carbon capture and storage market as it expands to meet emissions targets.

“The order of two state-of-the-art, largest CO2 carriers ever contracted constitutes not only a historical milestone for the Capital Group, but for the industry as a whole,” Capital said in a statement. “It also underscores the company’s commitment to playing a leading role in the global decarbonization efforts, as actions always speak louder than words.”

The two tankers are designed to transport up to 22,000 cubic meters of liquified CO2 at -55 degrees Celsius, as well as ammonia and LPG making them flexible to different types cargoes. The vessels energy-saving technologies such as dual fuel “ammonia-ready” engines capable of running LNG and ammonia fuel in the future, as well as shipboard carbon capture and cold-ironing (shore power).

“The specification of these vessels is the outcome of meticulous planning and innovative execution of the company’s technical team, embodying the company’s commitment to in-house expertise and progressive thinking,” the company said.

Capital’s investment in LCO2 carriers is part of a strategic commitment to building a future-proof “energy transition” fleet, which already includes a fleet of 18 dual fuel LNG carriers and 12 DF/LNG Suezmaxes/Aframaxes/LR2s.
