A crew member from an American Steamship Co. Great Lakes freighter was killed in a shipboard accident on Monday while anchored in Gary, Indiana, according to reporting.

The Great Lakes shipping website reported the crew member, identified as Richard Gray, was second mate onboard the M/V Walter J. McCarthy Jr. Circumstances of his death are not known.

A GoFundMe campaign set up to support his surviving wife and three children has so far raised over $61,000 of its $100,000 goal.

We reached out to American Steamship Company for comment but so far have not heard back.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard Ninth District said the Coast Guard was not alerted to the incident.

M/V Walter J. McCarthy Jr. is a U.S.-flagged, 1,000-foot bulk carrier that entered service in 1977.
