A.P. Moller – Maersk, owner of the world’s number one ocean carrier, has kicked off its new air freight service with a chartered airplane from Thailand to Japan.
The development comes after Damco’s freight forwarding business, which serves customers with air freight or multi-carrier options in ocean freight, was combined with Maersk’s logistics and services products as of early October.
Maersk said the milestone flight moved cargoes for a leading tire manufacturer from Thailand to Japan on October 11. The flight marks a first for Maersk as it expands its end-to-end logistics offerings to air freight. Maersk said is the first of multiple chartered airplanes.
“I’m extremely proud of the Maersk team who came together in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to mount air solution for one of our key clients needing urgent and tailor-made solution to meet its promise to their client,” said Rupesh Jain, Managing Director of Maersk Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. “The team worked around the clock with the client as well as our supplier partner to ensure an effective and cost-efficient solution. The shipment was delivered to the customer in time without any issue. It also demonstrates our ambition to become the integrator of container logistics with value-added services to our customers.”
Maersk announced plans in September to integrate its Damco Supply Chain Services unit and Maersk Line’s Ocean Product service, which will be combined and sold as Maersk products and services. The combination was the latest in Maersk’s strategy to combine its businesses into an integrated container transport and logistics company.
