Newbuild Supertanker Orders Hit Record High, Surpassing 2008 Peak
The world’s shipowners have placed orders for a record number of new oil supertankers, surpassing a boom back in 2008 that ultimately led to a glut and a collapse in rates.
STX Offshore & Shipbuilding has confirmed an order from billionaire shipping tycoon John Fredriksen calling for the construction of up to 6 VLCCs.
The order is comprised of two firm orders with four options.
The 300,000 DWT vessels will measure 330 meters long by 60 meters wide. The two vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2017.
In a statement, STX said the order will help the company expand in the VLCC market. Since early 2014, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding has clinched the lion’s share of Long Range 1 (LR1) tankers ordered worldwide and is considered a frontrunner in the construction Medium Range (MR) tankers.
The order from John Fredriksen was made privately and not immediately tied to any one of his company’s, although reports indicate that the ships will be offered to Fredrisken’s Frontline 2012.
