Greek shipping magnate and billionaire John Angelicoussis has been hospitalized in Athens in serious condition after falling ill on Saturday morning, Angelicoussis Shipping Group has confirmed.
Reporting indicates that Mr. Angelicoussis, 72, suffered from a heart attack.
John Angelicoussis is president of Angelicoussis Shipping Group, a leading Greek shipowning company started by his father in 1947. The company currently owns a fleet of 139 ships spanning dry bulk vessels, oil tankers and LNG ships through subsidiaries using the “Maran” name. It also has another 15 newsuilds on order.
“It is with deep concern that we have to report that Mr. John Angelicoussis, President of Angelicoussis Shipping Group Ltd, was taken ill early Saturday morning. He remains in hospital in Athens in a serious, but stable, condition where he is receiving the very best of medical attention,” Angelicoussis group said in a statement.
Maria Angelicoussis, Mr. Angelicoussis’s daughter, has assumed the role of acting CEO of the Angelicoussis Group.
”We understand the interest in my father’s condition. We will provide an update when we can and as appropriate, but in the meantime we kindly request that the privacy of my father and his family are respected at this most worrying time. Thank you,” she said.
