Greece’s Deputy Merchant Marine Minister Resigns
ATHENS–Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has accepted the resignation of Deputy Merchant Marine Minister Giorgos Vernikos, the prime minister’s office said Tuesday.
The recently appointed deputy minister stepped down over an alleged conflict of interest stemming from his involvement in an offshore company, state television NET reported. According to Greek law, ministers and political figures are forbidden from holding stakes in off-shore companies.
Earlier Tuesday the Greek government also named a new finance minister after its previous nominee bowed out because of health problems, appointing 55-year-old professor of economics and former vice chairman of the Greek natural gas company, Yannis Stournaras, to the role.
