A German warship a collided with a containership in Germany’s Kiel Canal Wednesday morning, causing damage to both vessels.
Reports say the German Navy frigate Mecklenburg-Vorpommern collided with the Cyprus-flagged containership Nordic Bremen at approximately 3:44 a.m. local time.
The containership was moored in Kiel following the collision, while the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was brought to Brunsbüttel.
Photos of the frigate show damage to the bow. The Nordic Bremen was also damaged along with some of its containerized cargo.
The 151-meter, 13,200 DWT Nordic Bremen is managed by Nordic Hamburg.
The Kiel Canal, or Nord-Ostsee-Kanal as it is known is Germany, is a 61-mile long waterway stretching from the North Sea atBrunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. It is described as “the world’s busiest artificial waterway”.
