A fire broke out in the cargo area of a UASC containership early Friday morning as it arrived at the port of Hamburg.
Local media reports say that firefighters were called to a container terminal at Waltershof shortly after midnight to respond to a fire in the container stacks onboard the 13,500 TEU MV Alula.
As many as 20 containers had to be removed from the vessel so that firefighters could reach the source of the blaze. The burning container was eventually taken ashore and opened so that its smoldering contents, reported to be cardboard bales, could be fully extinguished.
The fire was completely out at about 3:30 a.m. local time, according to to reports.
AIS data showed the Alula moored at Waltershof 6:00 p.m. EDT Friday.
