The SOUNION, a Greek-registered oil tanker damaged by Houthi militant attacks last month, is now under tow in the Red Sea as part of a complex salvage operation.

The European Union’s Operation ASPIDES confirmed the development in a statement posted to X.

“The salvage of the MV SOUNION is a complex operation and consists of various phases,” ASPIDES reported. “The tug boats have successfully connected to the vessel and the towing of the MV SOUNION to a safe location is in progress.”

The 900-foot vessel, carrying approximately 1 million barrels of crude oil, caught fire after multiple attacks on August 21. Houthi militants later planted explosives on the vessel and detonated them, causing fires that continue to burn.

The current towing operation is the first step in a challenging salvage process, with the next phase involving the transfer of its cargo.

Environmental concerns loom large over the operation. “Any oil spill could be one of the largest from a ship, risking catastrophic environmental damage in an area that is particularly dangerous to enter,” an expert warned. An earlier salvage attempt was halted due to safety concerns.

Saudi Arabia is expected to assist with the cargo transfer, according to sources. Meanwhile, ASPIDES stated, “By providing protection to this operation, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES contributes to maritime and environmental security.”
