Dubai shipbuilder Drydocks World has contracted Wärtsilä to design and supply the propulsion and other equipment for the first LNG-powered harbor tugs to operate in the Middle East region.
Wärtsilä notes that nine of these 29 meter-long escort tugs will be built and operated by Drydocks World and is part of a ‘green’ initiative launched by the Dubai government.
The tugs will feature two 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 20DF dual-fuel engines, Wärtsilä Steerable Thrusters (WST), type WST-18 Compact thrusters, the Wärtsilä LNGPac gas handling system- including the LNG tank, bunkering station and monitoring equipment, and automation equipment.
