Crowley has announced a joint mission with ABS to advance augmented and virtual reality usage within marine environments.

ABS, one of the leading maritime classification and advisory services providers, will join Crowley’s new service network using augmented reality on certain vessels.

Crew members will use special goggle technology to present remote technicians with real-time visuals. The collaboration will lead to quicker maintenance and upgrades on-board vessels.

The AR technology was developed by Kognitiv Sparks and unveiled at Corwley’s Innovation Expo earlier in the year.

ABS and Crowley’s collaboration will focus on classification surveys including annual and special surveys which will include task crediting. The project will also include activities featuring surveyors, engineers, and back-office support.

“Augmented reality technology is a field technology, so in collaborating with forward-looking companies like Crowley, we can explore what’s possible for future survey operations as well as for safety in use,” said Patrick Ryan, senior vice president and chief technology officer at ABS. “ABS class services are leading the industry and finding ways to enrich the data used to both streamline the class process and also keep mariners and our surveyors safe.”

Crowley stressed the importance of completing successful class surveys when operating a vessel.

Crowley owns and operates a diverse fleet of U.S. and foreign flag vessels, including container, RoRo, tug, dry cargo, and offshore wind development and service operation vessels.

“Partnership is key to sustainable growth and success in maritime services, and we look forward to working with ABS to advance innovation technology for the benefit of our maritime ecosystem and our customers,” said Cole Cosgrove, vice president, Crowley Shipping. “These innovations will provide mariners a safer and more efficient option and allow us to provide services for our customers that are even more reliable and effective.”
