The sometimes risky maneuver by cruise ships where they pass close to shore with lights and foghorn blasting for the shoreside population is being investigated as a possible reason why the ship steered off course.
The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino, has been detained by police and could be facing charges of manslaughter, shipwreck, and abandoning a ship, according to Italian prosecutor Francesco Verusio.
