The Liberian-flagged containership HSL Nike has been towed to safety after losing power in the English Channel.
French authorities report the ship was en route to Rotterdam when its main engine shut down while west of Cape Gris-Nez in France on December 26.
The ship anchored while its crew investigated the loss of propulsion, but after a day the ship started dragging anchor as weather conditions deteriorated.
Still without engine, a decision was made to tow the HSL Nike to the Port of Dunkirk for repairs. The tow was performed by the French Navy-chartered emergency towing and salvage vessel Abeille Normandie, marking the rescue vessel’s first towing operation since June.
Conditions during the rescue were described as “difficult.”
