CMA CGM, the French shipping and logistics group, has announced a significant expansion of its operations in South America, signing a definitive agreement to acquire a 48% stake in Brazil’s leading terminal operator, Santos Brasil Participações S/A.
Santos Brasil is the leading terminal operator in Brazil with eight strategic assets in container, liquid, and vehicle handling and logistics services across the country.
The strategic move will give CMA CGM control over South America’s largest container terminal, Tecon Santos, located in the Port of Santos. The terminal handles 40% of Brazilian container volumes and boasts a capacity of 2.5 million TEUs, expandable to 3 million in the near future.
“This significant investment reflects our commitment to strengthening our partnership with Brazil and supporting its growth in the coming years,” said Rodolphe Saadé, CEO of CMA CGM Group.
The deal, reportedly valued at $2 billion, will significantly enhance CMA CGM’s presence in Brazil. The company plans to accelerate investments in Santos Brasil terminals, aiming to increase combined capacity and improve service quality for Brazilian exporters and importers. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2025 pending regulatory approvals.
This acquisition aligns with CMA CGM’s global port development strategy, reinforcing its position as a leading global multi-user terminal operator. The company now has investments in approximately 60 terminals worldwide.
Following the completion of the acquisition, CMA CGM will launch a mandatory tender offer for the remaining Santos Brasil shares, in compliance with Brazilian market regulations.
