
Captain Dies after Greek Tanker Sinks Near Athens
The 48-year-old captain of a Greek-flagged refuelling tanker has died after his ship sank off the west coast of Athens on Monday, according to a Reuters report citing the Hellenic Coast Guard.
The Alpha 1 refuelling tanker sank at around 10:30 a.m. local time after possibly hitting an old shipwreck, the report states. 10 crew members were rescued, the report adds.
The tanker was carrying more than 2,000 tonnes of oil and diesel when it sank however no oil spill has been spotted so far.
The Alpha 1 is owned by the Greek company Viamar.
