Davie, the Canada-based multinational shipbuilder, has announced its intention to make a significant, long-term commitment in the American shipbuilding industry.
The decision aligns with a series of actions announced Monday by the White House aimed at boosting the efficiency, resilience, and competitiveness of U.S. shipbuilding.
Pending final site and partner selection, Davie’s move is expected to revitalize American sea power, spur economic growth, and create numerous skilled jobs for American workers.
Davie’s plans align with the ICE Pact, a trilateral collaboration between the U.S., Canada, and Finland announced on July 11. The ICE Pact aims to enhance the production of in-demand polar icebreakers, boosting economic, climate, and national security while supporting vital shared interests in the contested polar regions. The U.S. Department of Defense also launched its 2024 Arctic Strategy on July 22, outlining steps to preserve the Arctic as a secure and stable region in collaboration with allies and partners.
The White House on Monday released a fact sheet highlighting recent private sector investments in American maritime industries, including commitments from Davie, HD Hyundai, Bollinger Shipyards, and Konecranes. The fact sheet said Davie’s commitment would include a “major investment” in an undisclosed U.S. shipyard “pending final site and partner selection.”
HD Hyundai will support the U.S. Navy’s shipbuilding through educational and vocational programs, while Bollinger Shipyards, the only U.S. builder of heavy polar icebreakers, will contribute to the ICE Pact to enhance polar capabilities. Konecranes also plans to establish a consortium to build ship-to-shore cranes in the U.S.
Operating continuously since 1825, Davie has built over 720 specialized vessels, including many icebreakers. Currently, Davie is building the world’s largest orderbook of heavy icebreakers for Canada, a founding ICE Pact partner. Davie also owns Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, another ICE Pact founder, renowned for its exceptional polar shipbuilding supply chain. Helsinki Shipyard, established in 1865, has built more than 50% of the current global icebreaker fleet.
Davie has a history of supporting U.S. shipbuilders on strategic projects such as the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
