The Canadian Coast Guard is responding to a bunker fuel spill at the Port of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.
The Coast Guard said an unconfirmed amount of heavy fuel oil spilled during a fuel transfer operation involving the Hong Kong-flagged M/V Maipo River.
A Incident Command Post has been established to oversee the response.
Maipo River is a handysize (33,157 dwt) bulk carrier built in 2009. The ship is operated by Hong Kong-based Pacific Basin Shipping.
The size of the spill has not been disclosed.
The Port of Nanaimo is located in a natural harbor on the east coast of Vancouver Island, across the Strait of Georgia from the Port of Vancouver.
