Wind-assisted propulsion specialist BAR Technologies has formed a strategic partnership with Nervion Naval Offshore, known for its work in floating offshore wind platforms, to offer BAR Technologies’ WindWings technology in Europe.
The partnership marks the first manufacturing collaboration for BAR Technologies outside China.
Nervion, part of the Amper Group with facilities in Ferrol and As Somozas, Spain, will offer a local supply of WindWings for European customers. The partnership comes in response to changing EU emissions guidelines and the opportunity for cost-effective auxiliary wind propulsion.
Nervion will oversee the procurement and construction of WindWings and their installation across European shipyards. The steel and composite-glass rigid sails are designed to optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions. BAR Technologies has previously collaborated with dry bulk shipowner Berge Bulk and Cargill, the world’s largest charterer of dry bulk ships. It has also partnered with Yara Marine Technologies to market the technology globally.
Nervion will also handle the servicing of WindWings throughout their operational lifecycle and conduct training sessions for vessel crews on operating these wing sails. Meanwhile, UK-based BAR Technologies will uphold the responsibility to innovate and introduce more WindWings® variants.
“The establishment of a European supplier of WindWings® offers the opportunity to grow global sales of WindWings®, as vessel owners increasingly look to add wind propulsion to existing and new build vessels to comply with EU regulations,” said John Cooper, CEO at BAR Technologies.
Roberto Bouzas, General Manager of Nervion Naval Offshore, says environmental regulations such as the EU Emissions Trading Scheme are driving transformational changes in the shipping industry, providing opportunities for expansion.
“Benefitting from our history in manufacturing for the wind energy industry, we look forward to supporting BAR Technologies with new WindWings® installations, and to continue the path towards the decarbonization of global shipping,” said Bouzas.
This new alliance with Nervion complements BAR’s existing partnership with China Merchants (CMET), which offers sales and manufacture in Asia.
