All 23 crewmembers have been airlifted to safety from a 180-meter bulk carrier after the ship ran aground Saturday afternoon just off the southern coast of Newfoundland.

A statement from Joint Rescue Coordination Center Halifax said that it dispatched a Cormorant helicopter to the scene following reports that the MV John 1 had run aground approximately 1.6 km from Rose Blanche at about 1:30 p.m.

All 23 crewmembers have been airlifted from the vessel and taken to Burgeo with no reported injuries.

The 42,000 dwt John 1 is flagged in Panama and was built in 1991, according to data from MarineTraffic.
