A rather extraordinary sight to behold in Tokyo Bay today as the U.S. Navy’s two damaged destroyers, the USS John S. McCain and USS Fitzgerald, met for the first time since they were involved in separate fatal collisions with merchant ships over the summer.
The USS John S. McCain had just arrived from the Philippines aboard Dockwise’s heavy lift vessel MV Treasure when it happened to rendezvous with the Fitzgerald, loaded aboard Dockwise’s MV Transhelf, at an anchorage near the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Activities Yokosuka base in Yokosuka, Japan.
The McCain is arriving in Japan to undergo repairs following its collision with a merchant tanker off the coast of Singapore in August. Meanwhile, the USS Fitzgerald is awaiting her departure for Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where the destroyer will undergo repairs to fix the damage following a collision with a merchant containership off the coast of Japan this past June.
