It seem almost impossible that a top heavy cargo like this, can stand an ocean crossing.
Pena é que o destino das gruas não seja o cais portuário da Figueira da Foz, ou pelo menos para Portugal… :-(
Here's a video of the arrival, with comment and interview from Simon Moore, CEO of London Gateway:

How safe is this mode of transport?
I don’t think one has to worry that much about stability. I have not seen stability criteria and righting arm curves (G’Z)for such a vessel in loaded condition but take it that sufficient ballast water quantities will make these converted tankers stable. I would be rather concerned regarding their capacity to manouver in foul weather in restricted waters or areas “littered” with offshore installations. With an extremely large cargo crossection and thus an easy target subject to windage the vessel may constitute a gross risk pulling down a production platform or a similar installation when drifting out of control due to strong winds when unable to maintain intended course and speed. Same will apply should an engine breakdown occur when in congested waters.
To my knowledge, these converted tankers has not been uppgraded covering engine power, rudders or additional facilities for manouvering. Also, forward view from the wheelhouse is severly restricted. O/W officer must be dependent, while running from side to side in the wheelhouseon, on a reliable lookout located in a crow’s nest on the forecastle . I have never understod how this mode of gantry cranes has been approved as safe by various parties involved.
Excellent photos, I suppose this operation requires a very special planning and coordinations. Congratulations….!!!!
