Ever thought to yourself “if I were in charge, I would…?”  Well here’s your chance to put your money where your mouth is.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) is seeking applicants for the position of Accident Investigation Board Chief for the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), one of the two agencies that will replace the former Minerals Management Service on Oct. 1, 2011.

This position, located in the bureau’s office in Herndon, VA, will serve as the Chief of the Accident Investigation Board, responsible for directing national and international programs for investigating accidents, compiling and evaluating incident data, issuing Safety Alerts and publishing summary reports on Outer Continental Shelf accidents and incidents.

“This position is extraordinarily important,” BOEMRE Director Michael R. Bromwich said. “We are making every effort to enhance safety and reduce the risk of accidents, but offshore energy exploration and development operations will never be completely risk-free. It is imperative that we have the right person leading a team of investigators that will help determine the root causes and contributing factors of accidents. We need to conduct sound investigations, and build on the knowledge obtained in those investigations, so we can learn from them and continuously improve operational and environmental safety.”

Responsibilities for the position include recommending new regulations to prevent accidents from recurring, recommending research projects to mitigate failures leading to accidents, recommending changes in inspection and enforcement practices based on investigative findings, overseeing safety management systems audits and ensuring regulatory compliance.

So what does a top position at the BOEMRE pay?  $123,758.00 – $155,500.00  a year, according to the listing.
