WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)–U.S. investigators are delaying the release of a much-anticipated report on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, citing the need for more time to “ensure that all evidence is properly weighed and considered.”
The investigation–being conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement–was scheduled to be released July 27.
On Friday, five days before the scheduled release date, the ocean energy bureau said the timeline was being pushed back. It would not identify the new date on which the report would be released.
“To ensure that all evidence is properly weighed and considered, the [investigation team] is taking additional time to finalize the report,” bureau spokeswoman Eileen Angelico said. “The team is in the final stages of completing its report and expects to release it in the near future.”
The findings of the investigation are likely to play a big role in the development of new drilling safety standards that the bureau is now developing.
