Here’s a time-lapse video just released by the Panama Canal Authority showing the offloading of the second shipment of gates for the Panama Canal’s new third set of locks.

The second shipment of four rolling gates for the new locks arrived at a special unloading dock Colón, Panama in June aboard the semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel STX Sun Rise following a month long journey from Trieste, Italy.

The new locks will have a total of 16 rolling gates (eight for each new lock complex). The remaining 8 gates will be shipped four at a time from Italy and are expected to be by the end of 2014.

On Monday, the Panama Canal Authority and the building consortium hired to construct the new locks, GUPC, finalized a contract that, among others things, will ensure the remaining gates are delivered on schedule.

The third set of locks are expected to be completed by December 2015 with operations beginning in January 2016.
