South Korea to Ban Single-Hulled Tankers in 2011
South Korea declared yesterday that single-hulled tankers greater than 5,000 tons will be “barred from operating in territorial waters” as of 1 January 2011. At first glance, this requirement appears slightly more rigid than the United States’ 1990 Oil Pollution Act and MARPOL Amendment 13g allowing Category 2 or 3 single-hulled tankers that have passed a “Condition Assessment Scheme” to operate until 2015, or until their 25th year in service, whichever is earlier.
