August 3rd, 2023 marked the start of steel cutting for the two Robert Allan Ltd. designed RAmparts 3700 ASD tugs for Rizhao Port, Shandong Province, China.

The two tugs will be constructed at the facilities of Rizhao Gangda Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. As per Rizhao Port, the construction of the two tugs marked further accelerated cooperation between the Port and Robert Allan Ltd. in development and construction of tugs.

The cargo handling capacity of the port has rapidly increased and the size of vessels calling the port are getting larger and larger. The new tugs under construction are more powerful compared to the tug Rigang Tuo 1, a Robert Allan Ltd. design which was delivered to the port in 2021. The new tugs are designed with an improved accommodation layout with bulwark and fendering arranged for safe boarding of pilots. Machinery arrangement also gets improvement from the previous design. On completion, the tugs will not only serve the port for ship-handling but also for coastal towing.

Main particulars of the RAmparts 3700 ASD tug are:

  • Length, overall (including fenders): 39.70 m
  • Beam, moulded: 11.80 m
  • Depth, moulded: 5.72 m
  • Maximum draft (navigational): 4.75 m
  • Gross Tonnage: 626

Performance is estimated to be:

  • Bollard pull, astern: 80 t
  • Free running speed, ahead: 13.0 knots
