Oil Supertankers Headed For China Jump To The Highest In A Year

A Mediterranean Shipping Company containership appears to be grounded on the breakwater at the Port of Gioia Tauro in Italy.
AIS data from MarineTraffic.com shows the ship, the 340-meter-long MSC Elaine, was outbound from the port when it apparently swung wide on a turn and grounded along a breakwater at the harbor’s entrance just after 9 a.m. Monday morning.
Photos and videos show the ship with its starboard bow up against the southern breakwater with multiple tugs assisting.
The MSC Elaine is a 8,566 TEU containership built in 2009 and sailing under the flag of Panama. Her reported draft is 14 meters.
So far no injuries or pollution have been reported, but damage to the ship unknown.
MSC Elaine’s next port of call is scheduled in Marsaxlokk, Malta.
