A fire has erupted in containers toppled at the Port of Iskenderun by the powerful earthquakes that rocked Turkey Monday .

More than 2,400 people are believed to have been killed after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck just before dawn on Monday in southern Turkey near the northern border of Syria. Hours later, a 7.5 magnitude aftershock was recorded.

Photos of the Port of Iskenderun, located on the Mediterranean Sea, show flames and smoke coming from toppled container stacks. Video shows firefighting efforts underway from the water.

Meanwhile, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) terminal that exports Azeri crude oil be closed through February 8th while operators assess earthquake damage, a Turkish shipping agent said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquakes occurred near the East Anatolia fault in an area known to be seismically active.
