Crane Booms Collapses onto Containership at Port of Vancouver

The boom of a giant ship-to-shore crane collapsed onto the deck of a containership at the Port of Vancouver on Monday.

According to reports, the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. Monday morning as the ship, identified as MV Ever Summit, was berthed at the GCT Vanterm terminal at Port Metro Vancouver.

A video from Canada’s Global News shows the boom resting across at two rows of containers, with visible signs of damage to both the crane and cargo.

AIS ship tracking data showed the MV Ever Summit arrived from early this morning around the same time as the crane was reported to have collapsed.

It was not immediately clear whether or not the ship made contact with the crane before the boom fell.

So far there there have been no reports of injuries. 

GCT Vanterm is operated by GCT Canada, a subsidiary Global Container Terminals. The terminal has a total of six super post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantry crane.
