The first caissons, or sponsons, have been installed on the port side of the Costa Concordia.
The operation was carried out using the dynamically positioned heavy lift ship Svenja, which is owned and operated by SAL Heavy Lift.
Once in place, the caissons, which are large watertight chambers, will be filled with water to help upright the ship. The installation of the caissons is part of second stage of the salvage of the Costa Concordia.
According to the photos posted to Giglio’s facebook, at least two caissons have been installed. In total, 17 caisson’s will be installed on the port side.
