File photo of cranes at Mariel port on the outskirts of Havana
Cranes at the Mariel port are seen on the outskirts of Havana in this August 20, 2014 file photo. Cuba’s improved relations with the United States could lead to a more rapid expansion of the port upon which the country has staked much of its economic future, an executive whose company built the port said on Friday. Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht SA completed the $800 million project at Mariel, west of Havana, a little over a year ago. It is seen as a potential distribution center for the Caribbean and Central and South America and is at the heart of a special development zone designed to attract foreign investment in Cuba.
