Dana Petroleum Announces “Keel Laying” of New Sevan-Design FPSO

The “keel laying”of Dana Petroleum’s new $400 million floating, storage, production and offloading vessel (FPSO) has commenced today, but then again, if a vessel is cylindrical, does it really have a keel?

As announced in July 2012, Dana Petroleum chose a Sevan Marine’s proprietary cylindrical design for their FPSO which will eventually be installed about 160 km east of the Shetland Islands in the North Sea.  Dana and its 23 percent partner Cieco are investing $1.6 billion in the Western Isles Project, a nine-well development of two oil fields called Harris and Barra.

Dana’s Group Chief Executive Marcus Richards said: “This is a major milestone for Dana and the Western Isles project. We aim to significantly grow our production over the next five years and this project is vital to helping us achieve that goal.”

The vessel will displace around 26,000 tonnes and can safely store up to 400,000 barrels of oil notes Dana.

The hull and topsides of the FPSO are being constructed in China and upon completion, will be transported to the North Sea to begin operations in late 2015.
