Japan-based IINO LINES and J-POWER, the Japanese electric utility, have agreed to install a Norsepower Rotor Sail™ on the coal carrier M/B Yodohime, marking the world’s first installation of a rotor sail on a bulk vessel dedicated to coal cargoes.

The Norsepower Rotor Sail™ is a modernized version of the Flettner rotor that uses wind to generate thrust, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by approximately 6-10% when combined with the navigation optimization system.

The installation is scheduled to take place in Q3 2024.

For IINO Lines, the installation will mark its second vessel to be equipped with Norsepower Rotor Sails™ following the installation of two rotor sails on a newbuild Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) under construction in South Korea. Installation in that project is scheduled to take place in Q2 2024.

For J-POWER, the installation will mark its second use of auxiliary wind propulsion on a dedicated coal carrier following the installation of a Seawing automated kite system on board the M/V Corona Citrus, which was announced back in March.
