SULU SEA (Feb. 8, 2013) The mine countermeasures ship USS Guardian (MCM 5) sits aground on Tubbataha Reef. Since the Jan. 17 grounding, the U.S. Navy has worked in close cooperation with Philippine authorities to minimize environmental effects while developing a plan to safely remove Guardian from the reef. With the deteriorating integrity of the ship, the weight involved, and where it has grounded on the reef, the determination has been made that dismantling the ship in sections is the only supportable salvage option. The U.S. Navy continues to work closely with the Philippine Coast Guard as the salvage effort moves forward. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Kelby Sanders/Released)
