DNV GL Awards Approval in Principle for 25,000 TEU Containership

DNV GL has awarded China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding an Approval in Principle for the design of a 25,000 TEU LNG-powered containership which would be the largest in the world. 

The international classification society made the announcement in a post to Twitter. Knut Orbeck Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime, handed the AiP certificate to Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding’s President, Chen Jun, during a ceremony at the Marintec China expo this week.

At 25,000 TEU capacity, the ship will be the largest containership in the world.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation. In October, China approved a long-rumored merger of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), its two largest shipbuilding conglomerates. The combined company, named China Shipbuilding Group, will create the world’s largest shipbuilding group by far with more than $140 billion annual revenues.
