They saw it and didn't care. Its like when I was off the Philippians the small bonka boats would be invisible at night with no lights on at all. When we got 100 yards from them all of a sudden a flashlight would light up and we would do a sharp turn to avoid them or we hope we did

The protocols in place on all USNS Ships would ensure plenty of warnings were provided prior to the use of deadly force...I know, I sailed on those ships for 27 years, and I know the Master of the Rappahannock to be a stickler for protocol, especially when it comes to security and the use of force...regardless of what might be said by a "fisherman" who ignored the warnings and now wishes to be seen in the best of light.

This is an issue in this area. Very hard to differentiate a real threat from a regular fishing vessel. I do feel sad for the families which get affected by such incidents. Hope such incidents make the fishermen in the region more aware of the dangers of approaching too close to vessels.

We had the exact same thing happen in the Persian Gulf, on the USNS Charlton. Fired flares numerous times, then fired warning shots into the sea, across their bow, but to no avail. They still altered course directly at us when the EST opened fire. That stopped them.
