It’s really quite difficult to take a photo of an ocean wave that really looks like anything more than a ripple in the water once you download it to your computer, but if you’re using the right equipment, have the right light, and are able to position yourself in the perfect position, well, photographer Corey Arnold shows us what’s possible:

Corey is a photographer and Alaskan commercial fisherman. From 2003-2010 he worked as a deckhand on the Bering Sea crabber F/V Rollo and more recently, captains a wild salmon gillnetting operation in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The off season is filled with travel, gallery exhibitions, magazine and ad photography assignments mixed with a bit of backyard gardening, cat maintenance, and skateboarding in Portland, Oregon.

He is currently working on a life long project entitled FISH-WORK which chronicles the commercial fishing lifestyle throughout the world. In 2010, a PEW foundation commission led to the Fish-Work Europe series, photographing aboard fishing vessels in eight European countries. in 2005, he received an American Scandinavian Foundation grant to photograph the fishermen and whalers of Northern Norway. Corey was recently nominated for the Aperture West Book Prize and the Santa Fe Prize for Photography, and named one of PDNs 30 for 2009. His pictures have been featured in The Paris Review, Esquire, Whitewall, Artweek, Outside, American Photo, Juxtapoz and many others.

It’s time to cast your votes for the 2008 webby awards. While we are sad to report gCaptain did not receive a nomination this year we are please to find some other great sites that did.

The image above links to the most innovative and graphically pleasing website of the year “The Whale Hunt“. What is it exactly? Boiled down the site documents the whaling tradition of Inupiat Eskimos in Barrow, Alaska. What is generating buzz is how photographer Jonathan Harris displays his amazing photos in such a graphically stunning and usable design. Here’s more the information from their FAQ:

Is this a political project?

No. This project has nothing to do with politics. It is about storytelling, and makes no comment on the politics of hunting whales.

What’s the difference between subsistence whaling and commercial whaling?

Subsistence whaling is the hunting of whales by aboriginal groups who have a tradition of whaling. Commercial whaling is the hunting of whales for commerical profit. The International Whaling Commission includes a more detailed definition here.

Do you personally support subsistence whaling?

As stated above, this project is not political. But speaking personally, after spending nine days with an Inupiat Eskimo family in Barrow, Alaska, observing their traditional whale hunt, I support their right to continue whaling, in compliance with scientifically determined annual quotas. Nutritionally, whale meat has allowed the Inupiats to subsist in the Arctic for thousands of years (where farming is impossible due to eleven months of snow covered ground, and where fresh fruit and vegetables are flown in at great expense). Culturally, the whale hunt is equally important to the Inupiats, shaping their sense of honor, purpose, community, and identity.

For gCaptain’s coverage of whaling CLICK HERE then head over to the 2008 webby awards to vote on your favorite maritime related sites. Our top pick? National Geographic for the use of social media in the release of their top shows The Deadliest Catch and America’s Port.

We use flickr to bring you the Photo Of The Day on our homepage and more than a dozen times a single photographer’s work has been featured; OneEighteen.

Why do we enjoy his work so much? Aside from the fact he takes amazing photographs, OneEighteen is a Houston Ship Channel Pilot who has an eye for interesting ships and situations. He also notates each photo with ship names, details and “insider info” from a pilot’s perspective.

Our favorite of his photos can be found HERE but we also enjoy the less spectacular like the photo titled “It didn’t happen on my watch!”.

Ok so where do you find these amazing ship photos? Here are some options:
