Jensen Maritime, a Crowley Maritime Corp. company, recently completed a major redesign of the Global Sea-managed fishing vessel Bering Defender. The project, which improved the vessel’s efficiency and hold capacity, outfitted it for pollock fishing in the challenging waters of Alaska’s Bering Sea. The refurbished fishing boat, formerly named Dona Martita, recently arrived in Seattle after departing the East Coast and transiting the Panama Canal. Global Seas, based in Seattle, is an operator of a diverse fleet of research and fishing vessels.

Initially, Global Seas requested several design changes to the vessel to optimize it for Alaska waters while making it safer, more comfortable and more efficient to operate. Per customer request, Jensen added a shelter deck, two gantry cranes and increased the fish-hold capacity of the vessel. However, an analysis of the vessel by Jensen’s expert consultation teams revealed that the Bering Defender would also benefit from the addition of a new bulbous bow and lengthened stern section. Finally, Jensen used the opportunity to completely redesign and expand the crew quarters and pilothouse.

The total design improvements resulted in an increase in the hold capacity by 30 percent with a more efficient vessel that also has a modern and comfortable living arrangement for the crew.

“Our capabilities really shined on this project as we were successful in continually finding ways to improve the efficiency, performance and crew comfort of this vessel for our customer Global Seas,” said Johan Sperling, vice president, Jensen. “We always jump at the opportunity to return to our roots by creating and redesigning fishing vessels. Our reputation speaks for itself when it comes to designing boats for the challenging waters in Alaska. We are proud of this accomplishment because we turned a serviceable vessel into one that will stand out among the best in the Alaskan fishing fleet.”

Specifically, Jensen’s work included the addition of a bulbous bow which has decreased the forward trim, making the vessel safer and more efficient in the water. By adding six feet to the redesigned stern, Jensen was able to smooth the water flow aft, which has improved the Bering Defender’s cruising speeds. The new shelter deck allowed the existing winches to be relocated up one deck, giving the vessel additional freeboard for winter operations in Alaska. The fish holds were able to be expanded when the shelter deck was added, thereby increasing the vessel’s total capacity. Finally, Jensen removed the existing deckhouse, raised the deck one level and extended the structure the full width of the boat. The pilothouse was also removed and replaced, and now includes a state-of-the-art electronics suite.

Before the redesign, the vessel had been working on the East Coast in support of herring and mackerel fisheries. The Bering Defenderunderwent construction at Patti Marine Enterprises in Pensacola, Fla., and has now begun work in Alaska.

An illustration of the Jensen-designed Northern Leader

Jensen Maritime Consultants said today it has won a contract to design a longline fishing vessel that, once completed, will be one of the world’s largest. The contract was awarded by the Alaskan fishing company, Alaskan Leader Fisheries and will be the fourth longline vessel in the companies fleet.

Called the Northern Leader, the vessel will measure 184 feet wide by 42 feet wide and be equipped with more than 38,000 cubic feet of freezer space with the capacity to store 1,867,000 pounds. To fill her up, the Northern Leader will use a Mustad Autoline Super Baiter allowing the crew to bait an astounding 76,800 hooks per day and process up to 153,000 pounds.

“Jensen is very pleased to bring its more than 50 years of naval architecture and marine engineering services to Alaskan Leader Fisheries and their new longliner project,” said Johan Sperling, company vice president. “Jensen’s heritage lays in the fishing industry and it continues to remain a very important part of our business. But the real strength of Jensen lies in the diversity of the product offerings. Our experience is allowing us to inject new technologies into this industry that were developed for the workboat industries – most importantly, the new propulsion package being delivered on the Northern Leader.”

In addition to the vessels impressive fishing capabilities, the Northern Leader will be designed to be fully diesel-electric with emphasis on minimal environmental impact and lightest carbon footprint. The vessel’s propulsion will be powered by two Schottel Z-Drive rudder propellers and a Schottel tunnel thruster. The diesel generating system, provided by NC Power Systems of Seattle, will consist of four Caterpillar C32 gensets rated at 715 kW each, two Caterpillar C18′s rated at 425 kW each, and one Caterpillar C9 rated at 238 kW.

Jensen says it’s design services will include the complete marine-engineering services for the vessel, from the concept design phase all the way through production engineering and 3-D modeling.

“The full services we are able to provide has been enhanced by our association with Crowley, which acquired Jensen in 2008,” said Sperling. “Crowley has provided a foundation that has allowed Jensen to grow and become a recognized full-service naval architecture firm, providing sophisticated, state of the art engineering solutions for all of their clients, including Alaskan Leader Fisheries.”

The vessel will be constructed J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corporation and is expected to be delivered in late April, 2013 to her homeport in Kodiak, Alaska where she will be used to support longline fishing in the North Pacific, Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands

Fireboat to be Equipped with Six Fire Monitors and 26 Manifold Valves for High-Volume Water and/or Foam Firefighting. Source: Jensen Maritime

Seattle-based Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc. announced today they have been chosen to design a custom “super pumper” fireboat for the City of San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) that will enhance the departments marine fire fighting and response capabilities on water.

This high-volume water and foam pumping NFPA Type II fireboat will feature six fire monitors and 26 manifold valves, allowing for more than 16,000 gallons of water and/or fire-fighting foam per minute to be thrown from a distance of 300 feet to extinguish flames quickly and safely. Typically NFPA Type II fireboats are equipped with four fire monitors and eight manifold valves, and can pump 10,000 gallons per minute.

The availability of so many monitors and valves means that the fireboat will be equipped to provide water directly from the bay or ocean should shoreside fire mains be damaged by an earthquake.

Meeting NFPA standards, Jensen will design the boat primarily for high-volume water pumping, firefighting, rescue, emergency medical service and patrol in the waters of San Francisco and San Pablo Bay’s and the Pacific Ocean within five miles of shore and the adjoining inland waterways.

The boat will be designed with a semi-displacement hull type to maximize capacity and reduce operating costs. Once built, the fireboat will measure 90 feet in length and 24 feet in breadth. It is estimated that the vessel be capable of reaching speeds of 12 knots. The vessel will not be classed.

On board, the vessel will be equipped with CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive) detection capabilities and will have self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs) for the safety of firefighting personnel and crewmembers.

“This highly capable fireboat will be a real asset to San Francisco Fire Department as it responds to a variety of marine events, including natural disasters such as earthquakes,” said Jensen’s Johan Sperling, vice president. “We will work closely with fire department personnel to design a versatile and highly efficient boat that can extinguish flames quickly and safely. We are pleased to offer our expertise and provide another industry-leading design.”

Additional design features include a steel hull, a main deck and pilot house that will accommodate three crewmembers, four firefighters, four passengers and up to 60 rescue victims; forward looking infrared (FLIR) to aid with firefighting and search and rescue; and a fuel capacity and efficiency that makes it possible for the boat to remain on scene for up to 36 hours without refueling.

The design is expected to be finalized during the second quarter of 2012, and the construction and delivery will be complete during thefall of 2013.

Jensen has vast experience designing fireboats of all types for major cities on the West Coast. Jensen’s recent vessel designs include the fastest fireboat on the Columbia River for the City of Portland’s Fire & Rescue team; a 108-foot fireboat and 50-foot fast-attack fireboat for the Seattle Fire Department; three 40-foot fireboats for the Los Angeles Fire Department; a 40-foot fireboat for the Los Angeles County Fire Department; and a 37-foot, 40-knot patrol boat and 44-foot patrol boat for the Seattle Police Department. Jensen has a complete line of fireboat designs ranging from 38 to 108 feet.

The Seattle, WA-based Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc., is a naval architecture and marine engineering firm owned by Crowley Maritime Corporation.

Jensen Maritime Consultants said it has completed the design of three tugboats for Moran Towing Corp. of New Canaan, CT bringing Moran’s Jensen-designed series of tugboats to five.

The three new boats are nearly identical in design to the two previously Jensen-designed, Z-Drive tugs, the Capt. Jimmy Moran and the Shiney V. Moran, built in 2008 and 2009, respectively, with the exception of some internal upgrades.

“Moran asked us to design three more of these tugs because they were so impressed with their maneuverability and compact power,” said Jensen’s Johan Sperling, vice president. “We are pleased to continue our relationship with Moran and to contribute to their ship assist and escort fleet with more of these highly capable vessels.”

At 86′ in length and 36′ in breadth, the series of tugboats provides a maneuverable and powerful vessel for ship assist and escort work. Equipped with a twin Schottel 1215 Z-Drive propulsion units and MTU-DD 16V4000 engines, the tugs have more than 5,000 horsepower. A deep skeg forward is included in the design for escort work, but the skeg will remain open at the aft end to allow for better maneuverability. The skeg also provides for a more stable platform when underway, minimizing rolling in heavy seas. An escort hawser winch will also be installed forward and an H-bitt and hydraulic capstan installed for aft towing and line handling.

The vessels also feature large-machinery removal hatches in the main deck and deck house to allow for easy removal of equipment from the engine room. Berths for six crewmembers will be installed in four comfortable staterooms.

Construction of the three new tugs began earlier this year at Washburn & Doughty Shipyard in Easy Boothbay, Maine. Delivery is scheduled for the second and third quarters of 2012.

Moran Towing is a leading provider of marine towing and transportation services on the U.S. East and Gulf coasts. The company currently owns and operates 95 tugs and 30 barges.
