An Egyptian court handed down death sentences to all but one of the 26 perpetrators involved in an alleged scheme to form a terrorist group and to attack the Suez Canal.
All of the defendants were convicted in absentia according to a Reuters report.
The case has now been referred to Egypt’s Grand Mufti, Ali Gomaa, a highly respected government cleric who has the power to commute the Egyptian death sentences if they are in contradiction to Islamic law.
Gomaa holds an anti-extremist view on Islamic issues.
