Durban-based salvage company Subtech released the following photos of the salvage operation they are currently conducting off Richards Bay, South Africa involving the bulk carrier, MV Smart.

The salvors are currently removing the heavy fuel oil from the ship’s tanks, a process which may likely be completed within a week according to reports.

As a non-mariner, it is amazing to me that the salvors are able to maintain electrical power to the ship. Since there doesn’t seem to be an external power source, I must assume the electricity is being generated by on-board generators. The presence of smoke from the smokestack reinforces this conclusion. It just amazes me what you mariners are able to accomplish. Way to go, guys!
