Why don't the merchant vessels arm themselves when passing through these
waters. Looks like just a few automatic weapons would discourage the
pirates.

Yesterday's headlines...

"Pirates Frustrate US Navy in the Gulf of Aden"
US defense budget $623 billion

"We can't protect every aircraft carrier-sized commercial vessel that passes through the world's well known trouble spots, can we?"--Royal Navy
UK defense budget $42 billion

"Indian Navy sinks pirate mothership during bold stand-off in Gulf of Aden"
India defense budget $19 billion

Does not compute. Especially when you consider that the total budget for piratical operations worldwide has got to be less than $100 million, probably more like $10 million.

Memo to the US Navy: Don't get wigged out by the peg legs, cutlasses and parrots on shoulders. The pirates are just thieves, like investment bankers, only with eye patches and lower expectations of their booty (a word that should be used much more in this discussion, just because it is a cool word).

Memo to US Government: Maybe we should have TSA develop a "Sea Marshall" program like the Sky Marshall program. Or, since they have been so successful at eliminating music piracy, maybe we should hire the Recording Institute of America to police the areas.

We simply have to keep the seas open for transport of economic goods. Ransoms must not be paid, governments have to co-operate with other government's navies, and pirates must be hunted down and prosecuted just as they were in the 1700s...
