The first build of Maersk Line’s E-Series, the 11,000 TEU Emma Maersk as seen from the 4,300 TEU Maersk Missouri. This was shot about 50 nm west of Port Said in the Med Sea on 23 November, 2006 after both captains agreed to close into within 0.5 nm. Both of us were on our way to anchor at Port Said, Egypt before transiting the Suez Canal, early the next morning.

Thrilling Wonder brings us the story of The Caspian Sea Monster. Built during the cold war this russian plane hovered over the water at speeds exceeding 200 knots.

They hover and skim above the water surface at speeds of up to 250 miles an hour, they carry heavier loads of cargo and troops than any airplane - the Ekranoplans, or “Wing-in-Ground” (WIG) vehicles are possibly the most exciting and strange looking technology ever designed by men.
Developed mostly by Soviets during Cold Wars years (by Rostislav Alexeev’s design firm) some of them were over 500 feet in length and had an estimated weight of over 500 tons! And yet they skimmed over the waves with grace, at high speeds, able to negotiate stormy conditions, unseen by radar - all thanks to an aerodynamic principle known as the “ground effect”. The Emma Maersk is a true Modern Marvel. The world largest container ship, longest ship currently in service and is propelled by the largest diesel engine ever manufactured. By mid-year 2006 the construction project was going well when on June 9th the accommodation block was devastated by fire.

The Emma Mærsk was about six–seven weeks delayed. The delay caused by a devastating fire in the accommodation quarters in the early days of June. A welding job on the main deck, close to the end of working hours, led to a fire that totally destroyed the almost finished accommodation quarters and all the equipment in the wheelhouse.
