blackwater is evi in concept and they should not be allowed to continue in iraq and most defenitly should not be given new contracts by the govenment

bombing and fighting the pirates wont do anything they have to be delt with at there root cause most of them have no other way to make enough money to survive
they started with only attacking ships disposeing of waste in somalian waters or stealing somailan fish

Why not a section in SOLAS that requires extra personnel on the bridge when passing through areas known for piracy. There should be at a minimum, at least one extra person assigned just to watch for any approaching suspicious vessel and to set off alarms and prepare for defense of the vessel. Using passive defense eliminates the idea of lethal weapons in the hands of untrained crew. There are simple to operate and inexpensive defense articles which the owner and/or shippers are responsible to provide on any vessel set to enter piracy waters.

Why not use heavy Firefighting guns who can deliver a 90m long beam of water filling a piracyboat whith heavy water in just a minut. fullfill the ship with three Guns, one on each side and one astern.
Todays industry will supply both mobil pumps and guns for the purpose.

It seems unrealistic to suggest that we can do anything to affect the lack of order in Somalia. Considering the fact that ships are being hijacked on their way around the Cape also, just rerouting doesn’t seem to be helpful either.
I think that, while personnel aboard these ships do the best they can, that there should be designated security, perhaps from Blackwater or other such organizations to help with this. There is a lack of manpower on tankers and container ships which invites the attacks, and I fault the shippers for this.

Armed escort ships and submarine patrols. Bomb all known and suspected pirate hideouts along the coasts and the ports. This should not just be done to Somalia but to all pirate base countries. If the country won't take action against them, then the world should take the necessary crushing action needed to put it to and end.

I agree with "OS." With out a stabilized political situation, the people will simply migrate to another form of terrorism once the piracy angle is quelled. The fact that a lawless state exists at all should be very bothersome to the world at large. I hate to whine "someone's got to do something" but I am not controlling any government at the moment, so here I go. Someone's got to do something about this or it might spark more of the same in the 3rd and 4th World.
