The Maersk Alabama is not a cargo ship, it is a container ship. Cargo ships have their goods in a hold inside the ship, container ships have a flatish deck and their goods are loaded and stacked on deck. (See the picture on the top of the page.)

I went to sea for 31 years and there is only one chief on a ship and that is the Chief Engineer. Calling the first mate a chief mate started in last 15 years. The only four stripers on merchant ship are the captain and the chief engineer.

Why do you refer to Shane Murphy as "first mate?" I have sailed on ships with 1st mates and they were always subordinate to the chief mate. I am quite certain that Shane Murphy is rated as "Chief Mate" and that a ship of 20 doesn't carry a 1st mate. Labeling him as first mate just perpetuates this improper nomenclature of US Merchant Marine posititions.

FBI also joined in the rescue operations. The four pirates involved in kidnapping the Maersk-Alabama captain were 17 to 19 years old.

Wow, what a dramatic story.. I still cant help wondering how a ragtag band of pirates have access to sophisticated weaponry and guidance systems to trap modern vsls seemingly without much of a problem.. I read somewhere that they took about 136 ships last year.. Thats a lot.. It needs a concerted effort by all govts going beyond bureaucratic borders to rein in these guys..
