This might not be connected to this particular subject. As a retired Chief Engineer with 30+ years at sea, I am an avid reader of anything maritime. I have always found it funny and curious that there are so many "CAPTAIN's" ashore. I have observed that as soon as a Mate get's his Master's licence, the business cards get printed with "CAPTAIN" so-and-so, it goes on the mail box, a personalized license plate :"CaptHiC" is ordered and installed on the family car, and when asked he will tell you that he is a "Master Mariner". Engineers don't seem to have that need, or maybe I am missing something. Is it the rarified atmosphere on the bridge that causes this reaction?

'of whales and men' by R B Robertson. I know whaling isnt very fashionable but this book is a tale of one of the last whaling expeditions and gives a balanced and wonderful view of the scale and drama of hunting on the high seas through the eyes of the ships doctor. well, i think its good anyhow, read it cover to cover at least ten times. tom.
