In this modern day & age I would think all ships would have some kind of sonar. Even the submarines of 1940 had it & it kept such mishaps at bay. It was their lifeblood in getting home without running aground. Mayhap this incident occured in not paying close attention. Even with visual & at night with a bright light I'd think even with my inexperiences I could do better than this! Then again, what do I know?
