RESEARCH VESSEL CREWS
Description:
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UCSD) operates four research vessels and one research platform at the Nimitz Marine Facility, Point Loma. Two large vessels operate globally and two smaller vessels operate regionally in the Eastern Pacific. Applications are continually accepted for the following per diem sea-going ship’s crew positions: Master (Oceans, Unlimited), 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Mate (Oceans, Unlimited), Able Seaman (Limited or Unlimited), Ordinary Seaman, Chief Engineer (Unlimited Horsepower), 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Assistant Engineer (Unlimited Horsepower), Oiler, Wiper, Marine Electrician (Electrician endorsement), Marine Electronic Technician, Marine Cook (Ordinary Seaman endorsement), Boat Operator, Floating Lab crewmember.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Candidates must possess valid U.S. Coast Guard documents and certificates for the position under consideration including license, STCW certificate and Merchant Mariner Document (MMD).
Candidates must also possess a valid U.S. passport, comply with USCG (DOT) Regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol testing and be able to pass a U.S. Coast Guard physical examination with company doctor. Finally, candidates must be willing and able to go to sea for extended periods – typical deployments range from several weeks to four months.
